Justin Verlander for MVP?

Last time I checked, MVP stood for Most Outstanding Player, not Most Outstanding Positional Player. That seems to be the argument that is currently going on when it comes to Justin Verlander. He is having an unbelievable season, and is basically a lock for AL Cy Young award. 24-5, 2.29 ERA, and maybe the most unreal stat, he is 16-3 when he starts after a Tigers loss. There is nothing more important to a team, when you play so many games, then stopping a losing streak, Justin Verlander is the guy that does that. Granderson can’t make that difference, either can Bautista or Gonzalez.

I hear the argument of, Verlander may only play 34-35 games, vs the potential 150+ a position player may be involved in. However, I look at this a little differently. Verlander’s job is to win games for his team. He does that about 73% of the time, based on the 33 games he has started and the currently 24 he has won. We will keep using Granderson, Joey Bats, and Gonzalez, as their job is to HELP their pitcher win games. Whether it to be to hit,or play d, they are all playing for the win.

Again, Verlander will win the AL Cy Young, but is that enough? He is the reason the Tigers are in the playoffs. Granderson falls out of the Yankees line-up, they have more money than god, and can find another bat to fill that void. Same goes for Gonzalez in Boston. And being from Canada, I get the love for Jose Bautista, but, end of the days, with or without Joey Bats, the Jays are still playing catch up to the big boys in the AL East. Losing 24 games, puts the Tigers in a race between 3rd and 4th with the Royals? Take Granderson out of the line-up, are the Yankees still in the AL East race. 100% yes.

He is without a doubt the Most Valuable Player to his team, He deserves the win, and should get it. The voters need to realize, it’s MVP, not MVPP. I don’t usually end these articles with a question, but I will pose one to you. If Verlander is wearing the Pin Stripes of New York, do the voters have a different opinion on who can and can’t with the MVP?

Cheers as always,

Bullock
